Halloween Hacks
Halloween is always a big deal in my house.
We’ve done family costumes for over 10 years and the kids really enjoy helping plan the costumes. Something we have tried to do is instead of getting a mass-marketed costume-in-bag, we try to thrift, or shop for pieces that we can use in real life or for other costumes. This is much easier for the adults since we don’t grow much anymore (at least we shouldn’t!). But if the base of the costume can be a plain colored dress that will be worn again, or a nice crown, or suit jacket, it’s more sustainable to buy something of quality and reuse it, than a costume that will end up ripped or in the trash in a few years. And for me, I have costumes ready to go for that last-minute themed party!
Okay, let’s talk candy.
First tip - grab a gallon plastic bag and label one for each kid or candy-aholic. I keep my plastic bags in a basket on a high shelf and when they want a sweet, I pull it down and let them grab a piece or two. This bag ends up getting filled at Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Easter, birthday parties, etc. It helps us not to overdo the candy snacking, too.
My budget-savvy friend posted this second tip that I finally tested last year and it was GOLD. Attend many trunk-or-treats, fall parades, and free fall events to collect all the candy you want. The kids love dressing up in their costumes, and the local community always has a lot of events that are free for families to enjoy. Let your kids pick a few pieces to keep in their personal candy bag, and then give the rest out for Halloween night. You reuse candy and pass it on, you keep a few of your favorites, plus you get a whole new bag of goodies come October 31. Then you don’t have too much candy, and you don’t have to buy any candy either. Except for your own personal bag or Reeses’ or candy corn. (I’m a fan of the pumpkins!)
Be sure to plan your events and schedule ahead of time. You will need some make-ahead meals or leftovers for a busy week like this! Or be okay with getting some take-out. Some places offer free treats if you come in costume.
On Halloween, we enjoy setting up a decorated table in our driveway and hang out outside and enjoy the cool night and fall vibes. Sometimes other neighbors join in, and I usually make my turkey pumpkin chili recipe, have red wine, and the kids enjoy pizza. Hocus Pocus is a MUST and by this time I have worn a costume 3x that week and I’m ready for a rest!
Happy Haunts, and Drink Up Witches!
